Front 1 — The Fire
Fasting and prayer.
Jesus did not say "if you fast." He said "when you fast" — and then spent most of His teaching on it warning against doing it for an audience. That order tells you what matters.
What fasting is.
Voluntarily setting aside something legitimate — usually food, for a defined period — in order to give that time and attention to God. It is not a hunger strike aimed at God, and it does not make Him more likely to answer. It changes the person fasting, not the willingness of God.
What it is not.
It is not a lever. It is not spiritual leverage, a way to earn an answer, or a demonstration of seriousness that obligates God. It is also not a diet with a religious label, and treating it as one is a good way to damage both your body and your prayer life.
Kinds of fasting in Scripture.
A normal fast — no food, water only, for a defined period. A partial fast — restricting certain foods, as Daniel did. An absolute fast — no food or water, extremely short and extremely rare in Scripture, never a beginner’s practice. And non-food fasts: media, screens, spending, entertainment, for the same purpose.
A first fast, done well.
Start small — one meal, or sunrise to sunset. Decide the reason before you start and write it down. Use the time you would have spent eating to actually pray; a fast with no prayer in it is just skipping lunch. Break it gently with something light. Tell one person, and no one else.
A simple first fast
- Choose the window: one meal, or 6am to 6pm.
- Write the reason on a card before you begin.
- Drink water throughout unless a doctor has told you otherwise.
- Spend the meal time praying — that is the point of the whole exercise.
- Break it with something light. Write one line about what you noticed.
A prayer you can pray tonight
God, I am setting this aside for a few hours — not to impress You, and not to earn anything. I am doing it to make room, because my attention is crowded and my appetite is loud. Meet me in the space I am clearing. And keep me from making this about how disciplined I am. Amen.
Medical caution — please read before fasting
Do not fast from food without a doctor’s guidance if you are pregnant or nursing, diabetic, underweight, elderly, taking medication that requires food, managing a chronic illness, or have any history of an eating disorder. Children and teenagers should not undertake food fasts. If you feel faint, confused, or unwell, eat something and stop. A non-food fast — screens, media, spending — is a completely legitimate alternative and is often more costly than skipping a meal.
