Front 6 — The Night
Praying through fear.
Fear does not respond well to being told it is unspiritual. It responds to being named, spoken out loud, and handed to someone bigger than it is.
Say it out loud.
Silent prayer at three in the morning usually loses, because the spiral is also silent and it is faster than you are. Speaking gives your mind one thing to follow instead of forty. Sit up, put on one small light, and use your voice even if it is a whisper.
Name the specific fear.
General dread is heavier than a named fear, every time. "I am afraid the scan comes back bad." "I am afraid he leaves." "I am afraid I cannot cover December." The moment it has words, it stops being weather and becomes a thing you can hand over.
Hand it over in one sentence, and expect to do it again.
You will probably hand the same fear over four times before sunrise. That is not failure and it is not weak faith. It is what casting your cares actually looks like in practice.
End with something true about God, not about your situation.
The situation may not have changed by morning. Finish on ground that does not move: who He is, what He has already done, that He is awake anyway.
A three-in-the-morning liturgy
- Sit up. One small light on.
- Say out loud: "God, I am afraid that ____."
- Say out loud: "I am handing that to You, and I may have to hand it to You again."
- Say out loud one true thing about God that has nothing to do with tonight.
- Then Psalm 4:8, out loud: "In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep."
A prayer you can pray tonight
God, it is late and my mind will not stop. Here it is, named instead of circling: [say it]. I am handing it to You. I will probably have to hand it over again before morning, and that is all right. I am not asking to stop feeling it tonight. I am asking You to stand at the gate of my mind while I sleep. You are awake anyway. Amen.
Prayer and a doctor are not rivals
If anxiety is running your days, disrupting your sleep for weeks, or you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please talk to a professional. That is not small faith; it is stewardship of the body and mind God gave you. In the US, call or text 988 for immediate mental-health crisis support. In an emergency, call 911.
